Flachau
Part of a large intermediate ski area covering a dozen villages within very easy reach of the city of Salzburg. The main resorts are linked by lift with regular buses serving other villages within the ski area. Towns and villages vary considerably in character, but there is something to please all.
This easily accessible ski area is extremely popular with Austrians and Germans but much underrated by British visitors. The areas which will interest skiers more are Alpendorf, Wagrain, Flachau, and Zauchensee, all linked by a complex network of modern lifts. Other skiing resorts in the area are Radstadt/Altenmarkt and Filzmoos adding extra variety and are alternative places in which to stay. All these areas are included in the regional Amadé lift pass.
Wagrain and Flachau are the most centrally placed and convenient resorts. Altenmarkt and Radstadt, linked by piste and lift across the 1677m Kemahdhöhe, are pleasant market towns. Their main ski area of Zauchensee is a few minutes' bus ride away.
Filzmoos, which is the hot air balloon capital of the Austrian Alps, shares its ski area with neighbouring Neuberg and is just off the edge of the ski circuit.
The whole Wagrain region comprises a dozen resorts served by 93 lifts covering undulating pastures and woodland as well as a handful of rounded 2000m summits. The area should prove enormously enjoyable for the vast majority of skiers with somethng to please all levels of skiers.
Lifts are mainly fast and modern, allowing you to travel a considerable distance from scenic valley to valley in a single day. The post-bus service is efficient, but it makes sense to keep track of time when venturing far from home.
